Security Threats and Protection:
Secure management that goes beyond mere monitoring is provided by the current version of the Internet Standard Management Framework-SNMPv3. This technology enables safe configuration and control operations.
SNMPv3, which was promoted to "full standard" by the IETF in 2002, provides commercial grade security and ease of administration, including authentication, access control, authorization, and privacy. This technology is available for networks, systems, applications services, manager-to-manager communication, and proxy management of legacy systems.
SNMPv3 with Security and Administration protects against four threats:
- Masquerade: Interloper assumers the identity of a sender to gain its privileges
- Protection Data origin authentication
- Modification of Information: Accidental or intentional alteration of in-transit messages
- Protection Data integrity checks.
- Message Stream Modification: Interloper causes messages to be re-ordered, delayed, or replayed
- Protection Timeliness indicators
- Disclosure: Interloper obtains privileged information via eavesdropping on messages
- Protection Encryption
